Where is the master playwright?
Over 10 years, there's been an anxiety over who the next number one playwright is going to be.
First published on this date two years ago, when I was looking to write an essay marking 10 years of writing criticism. The idea was was to try define my decade-long argument - in the form of the reviews and features I’ve written - against what kind of plays get to be considered ambitious. At the time, things felt dark - theatre critics were getting laid off, and I had retreated to my old blog, obsessing why I was writing unpaid. One month later, I became a contributor to the Irish Times.
