Gate Theatre, Dublin

★★★★★

At the beginning of the Gate Theatre’s extraordinary musical Fun Home, we see a young girl getting impatient with an un-attentive father. For Alison, the frustration bursts forth in a breathless, syllable-packed rush: “Come here! Hey, right here! Right now! / You’re making me mad.” That might be par for the course when giving a tantrum, but there’s something in the rapid delivery that feels obsessive. It almost sounds like Dad is driving her crazy.
